My husband likes me to then place a sheet of rolled out marzipan on top of the pastry base, pour the almond frangipane on top and finish off with a generous handful of toasted almonds. Marzipan is sometimes used as an ingredient in the making of Frangipane.

Yes, you can use marzipan to make frangipane, but it's not a straightforward process. Marzipan cannot be substituted 1:1 for almond paste because it’s far thicker and sweeter. However, you can make homemade marzipan from almond paste by adding corn syrup and powdered sugar or icing sugar, egg whites and almond extract. Frangipane is simply an almond pastry cream that contains almonds, sugar, eggs, butter and sometimes a small amount of flour. Like marzipan, you can easily make frangipane from almond paste. Adding basic ingredients like eggs and butter to almond paste is an easy way to turn storebought or homemade almond paste into frangipane. I use my 4-ingredient almond paste and add an egg and 3 tablespoons of butter to make a frangipane filling for almond croissants. You can follow the same process of adding an egg and butter to turn any nut paste into a frangipane-like mixture to make pistachio croissants, hazelnut fruit tarts, etc!

You can use store-bought almond paste to make marzipan but you cannot make almond paste from marzipan. Frangipane is a pastry or pie filling. Unlike almond paste and marzipan, it is not a product that you can buy off the supermarket shelf, so you need to make it yourself. Another difference between frangipane and almond paste and marzipan is the ingredients. In addition to almonds and sugar, frangipane contains eggs, butter, and flour. French-style frangipane also requires milk to prepare a custard, which is then mixed with ground almonds.
